Following his extradition from Switzerland, 21-year-old Sharam Muhamadi was brought before Sheffield Crown Court on a Wednesday. The court remanded him in custody pending a further hearing scheduled for 3 September.
Background of the Trafficking Operation
Muhamadi is alleged to have assisted Bawan Harwe in contacting girls as young as 12 on Snapchat. The two men, who both worked in convenience stores in Doncaster and shared a flat in Hexthorpe, used fake names to lure the victims with offers of drugs, e-cigarettes, money and taxi rides.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
At a trial earlier this year, the court heard that six of the seven girls were given alcohol and drugs before being raped by Harwe. In June, Iraqi-born Harwe, 28, was convicted of multiple sexual-exploitation offences and sentenced to 29 years’ imprisonment. Muhamadi stopped attending that trial in June; he was subsequently found guilty in absentia of two counts of arranging or facilitating travel for the purpose of exploitation, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
