Former Bangladesh Cricket Star’s Home Attacked After Supporting Ousted Prime Minister

On August 6, windows were smashed and petrol bombs hurled at the ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan in Magura town, about 170 km (105 miles) southwest of Dhaka. The assault set fire to the upper floor of the unoccupied house. Police said a group of people carried out the attack; no injuries were reported.

Sheikh Hasina, ousted as prime minister in 2024, fled to New Delhi in August 2024 and has lived there since. In November 2025 a war-crimes tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia for the crackdown on the 2024 student-led uprising, a verdict she calls politically motivated. The August 6 attack followed Hasina’s first public media interaction since her exile, a virtual address organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi, during which she pledged to return to Bangladesh in December. Shakib Al Hasan, elected to parliament as an Awami League candidate in January 2024, has remained abroad after the uprising and faces investigations for alleged murder, embezzlement, fraud and money-laundering.
