Historical Context

In December 2011 Russia merged its Space Forces with air-defence units to form the Aerospace Defence Forces, which President Putin dissolved on 1 August 2015 by combining them with the Air Force into the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS). The VKS inherited satellite, radar and missile-defence assets. Today General Denis Lyamin leads the VKS under Defence Minister Valery Solodchuk.
