John Carpenter Transforms Dream Into “Cathedral” Graphic Novel and Heavy-Metal Album

8/6/2026, 9:49:10 PM

Core Project Launch

John Carpenter’s first original graphic novel, “Cathedral,” was released on August 4, 2026 through Storm King Comics. The 14-track synth-metal album of the same name arrived on August 7, 2026 on Sacred Bones Records. Each album track is paired with a specific chapter of the 132-page comic, and liner notes guide listeners through the narrative.

Background & Context

Carpenter, known for *Halloween* (1978) and *The Thing* (1982), has not directed a feature since *The Ward* (2010). Over the past decade he has focused on music, releasing the “Lost Themes” series and scoring recent *Halloween* reboots. Finding the contemporary film industry “all corporate,” he turned to a creator-controlled format for his new story.

Creative Process and Family Collaboration

The concept originated from a 2024 nightmare about an abandoned downtown Los Angeles cathedral with elevators that plunge passengers into unknown depths.

Carpenter’s wife, Sandy King, co-wrote the comic with managing editor Sean Sobczak. Illustrators Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colorist Sian Mandrake, and letterer Marshall Dillon completed the visuals.

The album was created by Carpenter’s son Cody Carpenter (synths) and his godson Daniel Davies (guitar). Davies said the heavy-metal vibe emerged quickly, prompting the trio to exchange ideas. Cody described the process as “a group project” and highlighted tracks such as “Elevator,” “Lord of the Underground,” and “Revenge.”

Album Details and Narrative Integration

The 14 tracks span styles—from ’80s-style synth on “Primeval” to blues-y “Elevator” and full-throttle metal on “Lord of the Underground.” Each piece is timed to a chapter, allowing readers to experience the graphic novel as an “audio-visual storyboard.” Carpenter called the record his “first heavy metal album” and emphasized that the music is intended to be heard while reading, creating an immersive “movies-in-your-head” experience.

Official Statements & Perspectives

Carpenter argued that modern filmmaking is dominated by corporate financing, making a multi-hundred-million-dollar movie impractical for a concept born from a single dream. He said the graphic novel-album combo lets him stay creatively fulfilled without the financial burden of a feature film.

He described AI as “dangerous” and “something that bothers” him, stressing that music must remain a human-driven art form. Cody Carpenter voiced concern that rapid AI progress could eventually threaten creative jobs, yet acknowledged its impressive speed.

Impact and Significance

“Cathedral” marks Carpenter’s inaugural foray into original comics and his first heavy-metal record, expanding his repertoire beyond film and traditional scores. By aligning music with sequential art, the project offers a cost-effective alternative to a full-scale movie while preserving Carpenter’s horror atmosphere. The release underscores a broader trend of veteran filmmakers exploring cross-medium storytelling to bypass corporate constraints.

Upcoming Appearances

Carpenter will promote the project at Midsummer Scream in Long Beach, California, from August 7–9, with a listening party on August 7 and a VIP early-access segment for the first 50 album-novel bundle purchasers. Additional appearances are slated for August 14–16 at Fan Expo in Chicago.
