Boo at Trump Rally Amid Tribute to Fallen Officer
During a campaign-style event at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo honored Officer Austin Abdelnabi, who had been shot and killed while responding to a call the previous day. As Lombardo mentioned Abdelnabi’s name, a member of the crowd shouted “boo.” Lombardo immediately addressed the interrupter, telling the individual they were not booing the fallen officer.
Background of Officer Austin Abdelnabi’s Death
Officer Abdelnabi, 30, was ambushed on Tuesday near East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street after reports of a man waving a firearm. When officers arrived, the suspect opened fire, striking Abdelnabi. At least one officer returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene. Abdelnabi was taken to University Medical Center, where he later died. He had joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police in November 2023 and previously served as a decorated Marine Corps veteran with deployments to Africa and Okinawa, Japan. He is survived by his wife of eight years, his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Official Statements & Responses
Governor Lombardo clarified to the rallygoer that the boo was not directed at the officer, emphasizing Abdelnabi’s recent sacrifice. President Donald Trump later praised the officer, describing him as “a flawless person” and expressing personal sorrow, noting he had been presented with Abdelnabi’s record. Trump also used the occasion to highlight his support for law-enforcement and to promote his economic agenda, citing tax savings for Nevada’s tipped workers and endorsing Republican candidates ahead of the November midterms.
