Historical Context

After the 1991 Gulf War, which left 148 U.S. battle deaths and 776 wounded, the Department of Defense recognized gaps in casualty reporting. In response, it created the Defense Casualty Analysis System in 1998, overseen by CENTCOM and the Defense Health Agency, to standardize injury tracking for later operations such as Kosovo.
