He noted that the AI-designed viruses resemble the naturally occurring bacteriophage Phi X-174, which infects only bacteria, and therefore do not pose a direct threat to human health.

Potential Benefits and Risks

The ability to design new bacteriophages could accelerate research on viral mechanisms, improve antiviral-drug screening, and aid vaccine development by providing customized test agents. At the same time, experts caution that the same technology could, in theory, be repurposed to create harmful pathogens, underscoring the need for robust oversight and biosecurity measures.
