Historical Context

On October 20, 1977, a chartered Convair CV-240 crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines. The disaster occurred three days after the band released the album Street Survivors (Oct 17, 1977) and five shows into their tour. The crash halted the tour and led to a ten-year hiatus before Johnny Van Zant reformed the group.
