Royal Mail Unveils 9,000th Electric Van in Push Toward Net-Zero

Royal Mail introduced its 9,000th electric delivery van at the Colchester Delivery Office, joining more than 120 electric vans already operating from that site. The vehicle, painted in the service’s iconic red livery, marks a key step in the postal service’s fleet-electrification programme aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

The electrification effort began in 2017 with an initial order of 100 electric vehicles. Since then, the fleet has expanded rapidly, with 1,000 additional electric vans added since December of the previous year. In December 2025 Royal Mail deployed its first electric heavy-goods vehicles (eHGVs), replacing diesel-powered 42-tonne trucks with eight Daf XD 350E units at its Midlands and north-west parcel hubs. The company also rolled out more than 100 micro electric vehicles (MEVs) in November 2025 and launched a fleet of 20 e-cargo cycles to improve urban delivery efficiency.
