Peter Lynch, 61, was identified as one of the participants and was later sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. He was among roughly 120 individuals convicted for taking part in that mob.

A two-and-a-half-week inquest was held at Doncaster Coroner’s Court. Coroner Nicola Mundy repeatedly expressed frustration with the conduct of family barrister Richard Copnall, describing his body language as disrespectful. After Copnall apologized “unreservedly,” Mundy directed the jury to resume, emphasizing that the inquest was intended to examine Lynch’s mental health rather than to adjudicate whether his actions were racist. The jury concluded, on the coroner’s directions, that Lynch’s belief he was defenseless and the pending adjudication papers prompted him to take his own life.
Public Reaction and Commentary
Right-wing activist Tommy Robinson posted to his roughly one-million followers on X that Lynch was “one of us” and decried his death as a suicide caused by family separation. Columnist Isabel Oakeshott later suggested Lynch might be Britain’s “first political prisoner,” describing his sentence and death as a stain on the state. Labour commentator Owen Jones argued that imprisoning individuals with racist views does not eradicate bigotry.
Official Responses
Mundy repeatedly stressed that the inquest’s purpose was to focus on Lynch’s mental health, not to determine racial motivation. After Copnall’s apology, she indicated satisfaction that the proceedings could continue. No further disciplinary action against court staff was reported.
