Hall of Fame Induction
Roger Craig will be enshrined at the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The ceremony places him alongside fellow inductees Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri.
Career Highlights
Craig played 11 NFL seasons (1983-1993), nine of them with the San Francisco 49ers, and won three Super Bowls. He earned four Pro Bowl selections, an All-Pro nod in 1988, and was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team and the 49ers Hall of Fame. At Nebraska (1979-1982) he rushed for 2,446 yards and 26 touchdowns before being drafted 49th overall in 1983.
1985 1,000-/-1,000 Season
Coach Bill Walsh told Craig the team would need “1,000 yards” from him in 1985. Craig interpreted that as a combined rushing-and-receiving target and delivered 1,050 rushing yards (214 carries, nine TDs) and a league-leading 1,016 receiving yards (92 catches, six TDs). The 49ers finished 10-6 but fell in the Wild Card round. Craig’s dual-yardage feat remained unique until Marshall Faulk (1999) and Christian McCaffrey (2019) matched it.
Statistical Milestones
Craig finished his career with 8,189 rushing yards, 56 rushing TDs, 566 receptions for 4,911 receiving yards, and 13,143 all-purpose yards—ranking 76th all-time. Stat Muse lists him 10th among running backs in career receptions, behind only Faulk, Larry Centers and ahead of McCaffrey. His 1985 total of 2,066 yards and 15 total TDs remains the third-highest combined output among the three 1,000/1,000 backs.
