Taylor Colman, a fire information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service, explained that “the conditions on site are extremely dry and the forest fuels are very receptive to ignition and there’s wind coming out of the south and southwest — which is driving the fire to the north and northeast.” The combination of dry vegetation, steep slopes, and strong winds accelerated the fire’s spread up the hillside on Friday evening.

Residents experienced only minutes to escape. Ashley Jestin recounted that her husband saw flames and smoke at about 4:30 p.m., and the family fled before any formal evacuation alert was issued. “By the time we got out, we had embers on the seats of our car,” she said, describing how the fire quickly surrounded their home at the corner of Fish Lake Road and Princeton Summerland Road. Summerland’s 2021 census population exceeds 12,000, and the rapid evacuation left the community without power and with disrupted transportation routes.
