Women’s Pro Baseball League Opens with Rain-Soaked Debut at Springfield

The weekend marked the start of the Women’s Pro Baseball League’s (WPBL) inaugural season as the New York Heights faced the Los Angeles Queens at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois. Despite rain-soaked conditions and a construction-lined parking lot, a sold-out crowd gathered, many arriving from across the United States and from 11 different countries. Fans braved the weather, secured merchandise under a two-item limit, and celebrated the league’s four founding teams: the Queens, the Heights, the Boston Hunters, and the San Francisco Firebells.

WPBL Commissioner Justine Siegal founded the nonprofit Baseball For All, which aims to create organized playing opportunities for young women in schools, communities, and universities. The organization has helped athletes compete in events such as the Women’s Baseball World Cup and has facilitated stints in regional men’s leagues, laying groundwork for a professional circuit where women can play together for an extended season.

Many athletes balance university studies or jobs as bartenders, firefighters, and architects while pursuing their baseball careers. Families traveled long distances, with grandparents of first-baseman London Studer worrying about flight connections, and a 3-year-old spectator, Lenore Wooten, watching the game with her mother Jess.
