On 5 September 1972 eight Black September militants stormed the Munich Olympic Village, killing eleven Israeli athletes and a German police officer after an 18-hour standoff. The botched rescue spurred West Germany to form the GSG 9 unit and Israel to launch Mossad reprisals, prompting tighter Olympic security from 1976 onward.
