WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert circulated a memo to all teams after receiving a surge of media inquiries about transgender athletes in women's basketball. The memo, obtained by The Associated Press and ESPN, states that the league will continue “thoughtful, respectful” conversations and that eligibility rules—collectively bargained under the league’s CBA—currently require players to be women but do not specify gender identity. Engelbert announced that a task force of team presidents and general managers will meet next week to examine the matter further and that additional listening sessions will be offered to interested team leaders. She emphasized that preserving the integrity of the game and ensuring fair competition remain top priorities.
