Jan Stenerud, a Norwegian-American who pioneered the soccer-style placekicker, helped the Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl IV in 1970 and retired with 373 field goals. His 1991 induction as the Hall of Fame’s first pure kicker opened the door for specialists, a precedent later reinforced by the 2005 seniors committee and Morten Andersen’s 2017 entry.
