History

Historical Context

In July 1995 the People’s Liberation Army began missile launches near Taiwan to pressure President Lee Teng-hui’s shift away from the One-China line. Beijing then massed about 100,000 troops and, in March 1996, fired missiles while the United States sent carrier groups including USS Nimitz and USS Independence. Those gray-zone tactics reappear today in Chinese traffic-control orders and median-line incursions.
