Leadership Shift at DeepMind

Sir Demis Hassabis, the Nobel-prize-winning co-founder of DeepMind, announced that he is relinquishing day-to-day duties as chief executive of Google DeepMind. He will assume the chair of DeepMind and serve as chief scientist for Alphabet, the parent company. The operational head-ship passes to Koray Kavukcuoglu, a long-time colleague, who will become senior vice-president of DeepMind. The change was disclosed this week and follows the earlier departure of Jeff Dean, DeepMind’s chief scientist, who is leaving with three senior researchers to launch the startup Discovery Loop.

DeepMind, founded in 2014 and acquired by Google, has produced landmark systems such as AlphaGo and AlphaFold, the latter contributing to Hassabis’s 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Over the past three years the London-based lab merged with Google Brain into “Google DeepMind.” Recent internal reports describe political tension over collaborations with the U.S. Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security, unionisation drives, and resignations citing ethical concerns. A former employee who sued Google for alleged unfair dismissal was involved in those union efforts. Concurrently, Google’s flagship Gemini model series has faced competition from Anthropic and OpenAI, and the upcoming Gemini 3.5 Pro model has been delayed to improve code-writing capabilities. Alphabet’s financial strength remains robust, with a net income of $132 billion (£98 billion) reported for the prior year.
