Historical Context

The 2012 Scarborough Shoal standoff led the Philippines to file a UNCLOS arbitration in 2013, which the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled on 12 July 2016, declaring China’s nine-dash line claims invalid over about 90% (?3.5 million km²) of the disputed sea.
