Historical Context

In June 2009 NASA launched the LCROSS and LRO together, using the Atlas V Centaur upper stage as a deliberate impactor. On 9 October 2009 the 2,305 kg Centaur struck Cabeus crater, creating a plume that confirmed lunar water. Today KARI’s Danuri photos of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 upper-stage impact near Einstein Crater echo that event, prompting ESA and the UN to draft lunar-debris mitigation guidelines.
