The Widemouth 2 fire, sparked by lightning in late July, had already consumed more than 114,600 acres (46,400 hectares) and was 24 % contained at the time of the crash. The rapid expansion forced incident managers to postpone additional rescue efforts until the fire could be brought under greater control.

The loss of two firefighters in Utah adds to a recent tally that includes three deaths on the Colorado-Utah border in June and a fourth firefighter who later died from burn injuries.
