Israeli Security Relies on Armed Bedouin Clans in Gaza Amid Ongoing Debate

Armed Bedouin clans operating in the Gaza Strip have engaged Hamas’s military wing, inflicting “significant casualties,” according to Israeli security officials. The clans now assist Israeli forces in securing areas west of the Yellow Line and in locating weapons and terrorist infrastructure both above and below ground. Their operations are described as “deliberately discreet” and “effective,” proceeding according to a plan set by security authorities.

The clans’ activities intensified after the ceasefire that ended large-scale hostilities, and they have continued to function covertly. During the IDF’s ground maneuver in September 2025, sources in the Southern Command reported that the armed clans exercised control over the neighborhoods where they lived. Some clan commanders previously engaged in criminal activity that both Hamas and the IDF had sought to suppress.

Multiple security officials emphasize that the clans’ low-profile tactics are advantageous for intelligence gathering. The Israeli security establishment is considering keeping a portion of the clans inside the Yellow Line under direct IDF operational responsibility to shield them from harm. Senior officials on the U.S.–backed Peace Council, however, advocate disarming the clans “the day after” a future IDF withdrawal to the regular border line. The Peace Council argues that the clans should be returned to Palestinian territory as part of any withdrawal plan.
