Florida’s 19th District GOP Primary Packs a Parade of Outsiders and Ex-Convicts

The open House seat in Southwest Florida’s 19th Congressional District has drawn a slate of ten Republican hopefuls, many of whom have previously run for office in other states. Six candidates have sought House seats elsewhere, including former New York Rep. Chris Collins, former North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn, and Illinois investor Jim Oberweis. Two candidates—Collins and Jan. 6 defendant Jim Strand—served prison terms before receiving pardons from former President Donald Trump. The district, which favored Trump by roughly 30 points in 2024, is considered a safe Republican seat, making the nomination itself the prize.

Collins resigned in 2019 after an insider-trading conviction, while Cawthorn lost a 2022 primary amid personal controversies. Oberweis is on his seventh congressional bid, having run for Senate twice and the House multiple times since 2002. Catalina Lauf, a former Trump Commerce Department adviser, and radio-station owner Jim Schwartzel also entered the race, each touting Trump-aligned credentials.

Campaign finance filings show Oberweis leading with $5.3 million in receipts, most of which he self-funded through July 29, the most of any contender. Collins reported $3.4 million, also self-funded. Schwartzel’s filings list over $2 million, including at least $1.2 million of his own money. Lesser-known candidates such as Hawatmeh and Strand lag far behind the front-runners in cash on hand.

Candidates uniformly present themselves as Trump loyalists. Oberweis emphasizes entrepreneurship, term limits, a balanced-budget amendment, voter-ID legislation, and a “No Budget, No Pay” plan that would withhold congressional salaries if budget deadlines are missed. Collins frames his run as a pledge to back Trump’s “America First” agenda without hesitation. Lauf pledges to help Trump defeat the “radical left” and highlights her work on the SAVE America Act.
