Newcastle United Women Set Sights on WSL Promotion

Jordan Nobbs, a 71-cap England midfielder born in Stockton-on-Tees, says the primary objective for Newcastle United’s women’s side this campaign is promotion to the top-tier Women’s Super League (WSL). She reiterated that “it is promotion” and emphasized that the target was already stated in the previous season. Nobbs highlighted the need to convert draws into wins, noting that Newcastle recorded nine draws last season, which cost valuable points.

Newcastle finished sixth in the WSL 2 last term, 11 points behind champions Birmingham and nine points short of the playoff spots. During the summer, the club bolstered its roster with several high-calibre signings from the top division, including striker Martha Thomas from Tottenham and the Liverpool pair Leanne Kiernan and Gemma Evans. Nobbs, who joined the team in July, praised the new setup under manager Tanya Oxtoby, saying she now plays in a “high position, scoring goals, assisting” and feels she has “found that little spark again.”

She noted that representation from the region in the WSL has been sparse since Sunderland’s brief top-flight spell between 2015 and 2018.
