Pentagon Loans $400 Million for First Primary Scandium Mine
The U.S. Department of Defense announced a conditional loan commitment of $400 million to Australian miner Sunrise Energy Metals. The financing is intended to support the development of the Syerston Scandium Project in Fifield, New South Wales, which Sunrise describes as the world’s first primary mine dedicated to scandium extraction. The loan was disclosed during a meeting in Washington between President Donald Trump and mining executives.
Strategic Context and Prior Agreements
Scandium is a rare-earth metal critical for defense, aerospace, and data-center applications because it strengthens aluminum while resisting heat and corrosion. China currently dominates global scandium supply and processing, and it restricted scandium exports for defense products last year, prompting the United States to seek alternative sources. In October of the previous year, President Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a critical minerals agreement that pledged $1 billion from each side for projects aimed at countering China’s dominance in the sector.
Project Details and Stakeholders
Sunrise Energy Metals’ chairman, Robert Friedland, said the company aims to make the Syerston site a “cornerstone of Western scandium supply.” The project will be located about 450 km west of Sydney, in a region identified by the New South Wales state government as having some of the world’s highest scandium concentrations. Sunrise has already secured a commercial arrangement with Lockheed Martin, under which the aerospace firm will receive 25 percent of the mine’s scandium output for the first five years of operation.
Implications for Western Supply Chains
The loan reflects a broader U.S. policy shift toward directly underwriting critical-minerals projects rather than merely purchasing output.
Upcoming Milestones
Sunrise plans to file an announcement with the Australian Securities Exchange in the coming days, signaling the next formal step toward project financing and construction. The loan and associated agreements position the Syerston mine as a key element of the United States’ strategy to secure domestic and allied sources of strategic rare-earth elements.
