Sugar-Derived Bioplastic Forks Tested as a Microplastic-Free Alternative

At CJ Biomaterials’ research facility in Woburn, Massachusetts, pebble-sized sugar-based pellets are being molded into disposable forks and flexible films. The test forks decompose in a compost bin within weeks, and the films are strong enough for food-packaging applications such as baby-carrot bags. The company’s marketing director, Leah Ford, says the growing awareness of microplastics is shifting consumer attitudes toward materials that can be composted rather than landfilled.

Plastic Pollution Context and Bioplastic Promise

Traditional fossil-fuel plastics persist for decades, fragmenting into micro- and nanoplastics that have been detected in oceans, air, food, water, and human tissues. Bioplastics—materials derived wholly or partly from renewable resources like sugar—are promoted as a way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and curb plastic waste. CJ Biomaterials produces polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a polymer that biodegrades in marine and soil environments. According to the industry group European Bioplastics, biobased plastics account for roughly 0.5 % of the more than 400 million metric tons of plastics produced annually, but production is projected to double by 2030.

Performance Data and Early Testing Results

CJ Biomaterials feeds sugar to microbes that convert it into PHA, which is harvested as granules and sold to manufacturers for molding. The company claims that the same microbes can fully break down the material in a compost pile within six months. Independent testing by the 5 Gyres Institute placed bioplastic items—including forks, straws, and thin films—in marine, freshwater, and soil environments for 64 weeks. By the end of the study, most biodegradable samples had fragmented or disappeared, whereas conventional fossil-fuel plastics remained largely unchanged.

Official and Industry Perspectives

World Wildlife Fund vice-president Erin Simon emphasizes that biobased plastics can lower fossil-fuel dependence but must be part of a broader strategy to reduce overall plastic production. U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, who has held hearings on plastic pollution, views bioplastics as one potential tool while calling for more research on their ecological impacts. CJ Biomaterials, a subsidiary of South Korea’s CJ Group, has operated a PHA manufacturing plant in Pasuruan, Indonesia, since 2022 and supplies its pellets to companies producing compostable cutlery, straws, and packaging.
