Pentagon Renames South Carolina Base After Late Senator Lindsey Graham

Joint Base Charleston in North Charleston, South Carolina, was officially renamed Joint Base Lindsey Graham during a ceremony attended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Sen. Darlene Graham, Gov. Henry McMaster and Rep. Nancy Mace. The base, which supports more than 60 Pentagon and federal agencies, received its new designation on Monday following the sudden death of the late senator.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) served over three decades in the Air Force, beginning in the 1980s after law school. He spent six years on active duty, including four as lead prosecutor at Rhein-Main Air Base in Germany, and later transferred to the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1989, serving as a prosecutor at McEntire Air National Guard Base during the first Gulf War. Graham deployed twice to the Middle East and became a major advocate for the Charleston installation, which houses the nation’s largest fleet of C-17 cargo aircraft and more than 50 military commands, including the active-duty 437th Airlift Wing, the Air Force Reserve’s 315th Airlift Wing, and the Air Mobility Command’s 628th Air Base Wing. He died from an aortic dissection on July 11 in Washington, D.C.
