Derby County’s Planned Saudi Takeover Falls Apart

Derby County announced that the club is “off the market” after Saudi government official Turki Alalshikh’s company Lion Sport withdrew from negotiations for a controlling stake. The decision was communicated to Derby earlier this week.

Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and a prominent figure in boxing who co-founded the Zuffa promotion with UFC president Dana White, had been in talks with Derby County to acquire a majority share. The prospective acquisition had received formal approval from both the English Football League (EFL) and the Independent Football Regulator (IFR), and Derby received notification of that sanction last week.

In a post on the social-media platform X, Alalshikh explained that the length of the IFR ratification process left insufficient time to prepare the team for the upcoming season, which had already begun. He said the club’s preparation timeline would be compromised and, after “careful consideration,” he did not feel it was appropriate to proceed without the necessary groundwork. Alalshikh added that Lion Sport would remain in conversation with Derby County to explore future possibilities.
