ICE Agent Seen Outside Ilhan Omar Town Hall Raises Surveillance Concerns

During a recent town-hall meeting in Richfield, Minnesota, a vehicle identified as a Ford Explorer was parked outside the community center. A Richfield police officer noted that the vehicle’s license plates did not match the registration records for the government-owned car. The officer approached the occupant, who initially claimed to be security before later stating she was an agent of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agent remained on site until she contacted her supervisor and then left. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s fifth district, has asked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to clarify whether HSI agents have been used to monitor “any other activity” involving local, state, or federal officials in the state.

ICE operations in Minnesota have generated significant public backlash this year, including protests and the deaths of two Americans—Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good—at the hands of federal agents. In addition, Omar was previously targeted in January when a man sprayed her with an unidentified substance from a syringe during a town-hall event where she called for the abolition of ICE. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the attack as “unacceptable” and emphasized the need for civil discourse without endangering safety.
