Incident Details
Police in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area responded to a “found property” call after a buyer of an abandoned storage unit reported discovering packaged narcotics among the unit’s contents. The unit, located in the Hickory Grove division of eastern Charlotte, had been placed up for auction because the previous renter failed to pay monthly fees. The buyer, who had purchased the unit at the auction, opened several tightly wrapped packages and identified what appeared to be cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl. Rather than attempting to profit from the find, the buyer contacted law-enforcement officers.
Law-Enforcement Response
Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) arrived on the scene, conducted a search of the unit and seized the narcotics. A K-9 team participated in the investigation, and the Mint Hill Police Department provided assistance. No arrests or charges have been announced to date.
Quantities Seized
The seizure included:
- Approximately 25 pounds of suspected cocaine (nearly one ounce of fentanyl was also recovered).
- More than 3 ounces of suspected methamphetamine.
- Roughly 0.89 ounces of suspected fentanyl.
These figures were reported by CMPD and corroborated by the three news outlets covering the case.
Current Status
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to process the evidence. The location of the storage unit has been identified only as being within the Hickory Grove division, and no further details about the source of the drugs have been released. Law-enforcement agencies have emphasized that the seizure removes a substantial amount of illicit substances from the community, but they have not indicated any imminent leads or additional actions related to the case.
