Film Overview

Calvin Demba, the British actor-writer-director known for the Netflix series *Supacell*, is directing his second short film, “The Animals.” The story follows Miles (George MacKay) as he confronts feelings of emasculation and emotional impotence in his relationship with Remona (Louisa Harland). A violent home invasion introduces another man’s act of heroism, forcing Miles to grapple with the destructive masculine ideals that shape his behavior. The cast also includes Nathalie Emmanuel and Eric Kofi Abrefa.

Production Details and Visual Approach

“The Animals” was shot earlier this year on 16 mm film by cinematographer Ebba Hult, whose work has screened at Cannes, Telluride and the London Film Festival. Editing was handled by Mdhamiri Á Nkemi, and colour grading by Canadian colourist Jodie Davison. Executive producers are BAFTA-winners Mouktar Mohammed and Sheila Nortley, alongside Demba and Harland.

Official Statements & Responses

He added that the violence is meant to feel realistic because it mirrors current conversations about masculinity. MacKay said the script attracted him and praised Demba’s “mix of detail and freedom” during the creative process. Harland noted that the “clever script” and “incredible team” made the production a “total joy” and expressed confidence in Demba’s storytelling voice.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “I wanted to make a film that takes a satirical look at gender stereotypes and the role they play in relationships,” — Calvin Demba, writer-director.
  • “This film was a total joy to make because we had such a clever script and such an incredible team, and I loved getting to work alongside George who I have long admired,” — Louisa Harland, actress.

Festival Launch and Feature Development

The short is slated to begin its festival circuit at a BAFTA- and Oscar-qualifying major festival, with the specific event to be announced. According to the film’s producers, Demba is currently in early development with the British Film Institute to expand “The Animals” into a feature-length film.
