In October 1976, founders Bill Marshall, Dusty Cohl and Henk Van der Kolk launched the Festival of Festivals at the Windsor Arms Hotel, drawing 35,000 viewers for 127 films from 30 countries. Renamed the Toronto International Film Festival in 1994, it gained city and Ontario support and added a film market announced in 2024. By 2026, TIFF screens 293 titles, anchoring Toronto as a launchpad.
