In October 1989 Hungary’s parliament passed Act XXXII, establishing a Constitutional Court that began operating on 1 January 1990 to protect the rule of law. The court’s autonomy was later weakened by the 2013 “mega-amendment,” which 265 lawmakers approved despite EU and US objections. On 11 August 2026 the Tisza party elected former Supreme Court chief András Baka, reviving the 1990 pledge for judicial independence and opposing Viktor Orbán’s centralization.
