Espriella Declares Emergency
- President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national emergency and took direct command of the response to the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 10.
- He created a Unified Command Post, ordered a damage-needs assessment, and suspended flights at six regional airports for safety inspections.
- The quake’s epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó at about 100 km depth killed at least 132 people and prompted a US$15.5 million aid pledge from the U.S. State Department.
