She has described the loss as “destroy[ing] my aunt and uncle” and “my father”. The personal connection deepened after a close friend also died of overdose in 2016. Seeking a non-preachy approach, Mazzoli and Vavrek turned to author Karen Russell for a treatment. Their collaboration produced a story inspired by Kafka’s *A Country Doctor* and the fairy-tale motifs of the Brothers Grimm.
