History

Historical Context

On 18 April 1988 the United States launched Operation Praying Mantis, destroying two Iranian oil platforms, two frigates and a fast-attack craft after the mine-hit on USS Samuel B. Roberts. The strike helped push Iran toward a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq war. Contemporary regional attacks have revived fears that similar maritime clashes could again threaten navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
