Incident and Inquest Overview
On July 5, 2024, 34-year-old Scot James of Maesteg, Bridgend county, was involved in a “verbal exchange” at a bar in a Turkish resort. A security guard punched him once, causing James to fall and strike his head. He was taken to a hospital in Turkey, then repatriated to the United Kingdom. James died on July 26, 2024, at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf. A provisional cause of death was recorded as blunt head injury, including a left temporal-parietal fracture and right inferior cerebral contusion, pending histology. The Pontypridd Coroner’s Court opened an inquest on the basis that there is reason to suspect the death may have been unnatural and indicated that a full inquest will be scheduled later this year, pending the outcome of any criminal investigation in Turkey.
Investigation and Legal Process
Turkish police are understood to be conducting a criminal investigation into the assault, with assistance from the UK Foreign Office. Coroner Rachel Knight indicated that the inquest may be paused if the Turkish investigation requires further time, and she will arrange a mention hearing in four months to receive an update. A post-mortem examination was performed by Dr Stephen Leadbeatter at the University Hospital of Wales on August 3, 2024.
