July 2026 CPI Overview
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.1 % from June to July, while the year-over-year inflation rate slipped to 3.4 % from 3.5 %. Shelter costs rose 0.1 % and accounted for roughly two-thirds of the monthly all-items increase. Food prices edged up 0.1 % overall, with food-away-from-home up 0.3 %. Motor-vehicle insurance was among the few categories that fell.
Energy Prices and the Iran Conflict
Energy costs remained the primary driver of inflation this year. The report linked higher crude prices to the ongoing war with Iran, noting Brent crude at $90 per barrel and U.S. crude near $84 per barrel. Although gasoline prices declined 2.9 % during the month, the national regular-gas average rose to $4.03 per gallon, reflecting lingering volatility.
Key Inflation and Wage Figures
Wage growth lagged price increases, with the BLS indicating that average hourly earnings grew 3.2 % over the past year but slipped 0.2 % compared with the prior year. The mismatch has eroded real earnings for four consecutive months. Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, highlighted the impact on middle- and lower-income households.
Official Responses
Truist head of U.S. economics Mike Skordeles said the data support the Fed’s view of holding rates steady in the near term, while noting upcoming jobs and CPI reports will inform the Fed’s next decision in mid-September.
