Andy Burnham’s Early-Release Plan Faces Union Backlash and Public Outcry

Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government is pursuing an emergency early-release programme intended to ease severe overcrowding in England and Wales prisons. Under the Sentencing Act passed earlier this year, prisoners serving four years or more for certain violent or sexual offences would become eligible for release at the halfway point of their term rather than at two-thirds.
