Tiered Download Limits Take Effect
Starting September 3, 2026 (scheduled), Suno AI will restrict the number of tracks users can download from its generative-music platform. The free tier will allow a total of seven downloads, the $8-per-month “Pro” plan will permit 20 downloads per month, and a new “Premier” tier will offer 60 downloads per month. Users of Suno Studio, the professional-grade package, are exempt. The limits apply only to downloads; song creation within the service remains unrestricted.
Settlements and New Label Partnerships
In August 2026 Suno announced a deal with BMG, the world’s fourth-largest record label. Under the agreement, Suno will compensate musicians who consent to have their voices imitated by the AI and BMG will refrain from pursuing claims related to Suno’s earlier training of models on copyrighted works. The partnership follows a similar settlement with Warner Music Group reached in 2025. Suno’s co-founder and chief executive Mikey Shulman has argued that the service expands personal music creation while offering new revenue streams for professional musicians.
Subscription Structure and Protective Measures
Downloaded songs may be used commercially, such as posting on streaming services that permit AI-generated content. Suno will embed a digital fingerprint and metadata tags in each generated track to deter users from passing AI-created music off as original works. The company also plans to roll out new AI models built with label approval, replacing its existing models.
Ongoing Litigation and Potential Exposure
Despite the BMG and Warner settlements, Suno continues to face lawsuits from Universal Music Group and Sony Music in a Massachusetts federal court. Motion filings are scheduled until April 9, 2027 (scheduled). Analysts note that statutory damages in the pending cases could approach $9 billion, which could force Suno to adopt a licensing model if the suits succeed.
