Prolonged Development
Lanterns caps a development period of nearly seven years that involved at least four distinct production attempts and multiple creative teams. The project originated as a Green Lantern series overseen by Greg Berlanti beginning in 2019, during which eight scripts for a full first season were completed. HBO Max executives later rejected the original space-heavy concept, prompting a shift toward a more grounded narrative. While Lanterns moves forward, two other early-slate projects have been abandoned. Outlook
HBO has not issued an official renewal for a second season, yet a co-showrunner has already been hired for Season 2, suggesting internal consideration of continuation.
