Charlotte Repeat Offender Arrested After Video Shows Street Assault

On July 30, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 32-year-old Di-Quan Schafar Hunt punched a woman on a city street, then stood over her, pointed a finger at her face and slapped her while shouting. The incident was captured on video posted to X by local reporter Hannah Goetz of WSOC. The woman was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Hunt was arrested that evening and taken to a medical facility for treatment before being transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on assault-with-a-deadly-weapon charges.
Prior Violence and Related Cases
Hunt’s criminal history includes nine arrests in the past three years for offenses such as trespassing, simple assault, assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer, violating a protective order, contempt of court, breaking or entering, and probation violations, according to Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office records. He was convicted in 2020 of shooting into an occupied building or vehicle and was arrested in December for allegedly threatening a man with a knife near a Charlotte transit line. Police are also reviewing other videos that appear to show Hunt assaulting additional women.
The assault occurred less than a year after the stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte public-transit train. That attack was attributed to Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., 34, who similarly had a record of 14 prior arrests, including violent assault charges.
Law-Enforcement Response
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesperson said the department has no answer for why Hunt has repeatedly been released despite his extensive arrest record, noting that jurisdictional issues limit their insight. The spokesperson added that investigators have issued a public call for information, encouraging tips to be reported directly to detectives or anonymously through Crimestoppers. No additional victims have been confirmed at this time.
