Northwestern University’s football program is set to move into New Ryan Field, an opulent venue that will open in early October with a home game against Penn State. The stadium will also host additional matchups later in October and November, expanding the Wildcats’ schedule at the new site.
Design, Amenities, and Fan Experience
The 300,000-square-foot canopy covers all 35,000 seats, providing shelter while keeping the playing surface exposed to the elements. Sightlines are engineered so that the “worst” seat lies only about 136 feet from the sidelines—roughly one-and-a-half basketball courts away. Amenities include chair-back seats with cupholders, field-level suites with bars, a 10,000-square-foot LED scoreboard, and 244 hanging televisions. A standing-only “Wildcat Wall” student section, dubbed the “Wildcat Zone,” sits directly atop the end zone, intended to intensify the home-field advantage.
Capacity, Cost, and Field Technology
New Ryan Field reduces overall capacity from the former 47,000 to 35,000, reflecting a focus on proximity and experience rather than sheer volume. Construction costs total $875 million, making it the most expensive college football stadium ever built. The playing surface utilizes FieldTurf’s Trico One system, which Northwestern notes meets the joint standards of the NFL and the NFL Players Association.
