History

Historical Context

On October 6 1998, gay student Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming; Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were later convicted and given two consecutive life sentences. The national outcry spurred federal hate-crime reform, and in October 2009 Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act by a 247-173 vote, signed by President Obama.
