Historical Context

On the night of 31 January 1953 a storm tide breached sea walls at 1,200 sites along England’s east coast, killing 307 people and flooding Essex villages such as West Mersea. The disaster spurred the UK Home Office to fund coastal defences, culminating in the Thames Barrier opened 8 May 1984. Today Essex Police and ambulance crews face a comparable tragedy, echoing the 1953 flood.
