The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that a tropical storm designated Hernan developed in the Pacific Ocean earlier this week. At the time of observation, Hernan was situated roughly 1,460 mi (2,350 km) west of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, moving westward with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (64 kph). The NHC noted that Hernan was not projected to threaten any land areas.

In contrast, the NHC identified another disturbance, labeled Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C, positioned about 775 mi (1,247 km) east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. Although its winds were also near 40 mph, the system lacked sufficient organization to be classified as a tropical storm. Forecasters indicated that One-C could approach the southern part of the Big Island as a tropical storm by Saturday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and hazardous surf.

Expected Rainfall and Flood Risks for Hawaii

The center projected that One-C could deliver rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 cm) across the islands, with isolated amounts potentially reaching 20 inches (51 cm). Such precipitation levels were described as capable of triggering flooding and mudslides, especially in vulnerable terrain.

The NHC emphasized that while Hernan remains a distant, non-impacting system, the primary concern for residents and authorities is the approaching One-C disturbance. The agency’s outlook highlighted the need for preparedness measures on the Big Island, including monitoring of river levels and readiness for possible evacuation orders in flood-prone areas.
