Trump Says Black and Brown Voters Are “Flocking” to GOP, New Polls Show Sharp Disapproval

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Black and Brown voters are “flocking to the Republican Party,” linking the shift to opposition to “Communism or Socialism.” The statement contrasts with the latest Economist/YouGov poll, which surveyed 1,589 U.S. adults between August 7 and 10. Only 13 % of Black respondents approved of Trump’s job performance, while 79 % disapproved, yielding a net approval of -66—the lowest among Black voters since his return to office. A separate question showed 22 % approval and 69 % disapproval, a net of -47. Among Hispanic respondents, approval stood at 27 % versus 66 % disapproval, a net of -39. Overall adult approval of Trump was -10.

Economic perceptions mirror the approval slump. The poll found that just 16 % of Black voters rate the U.S. economy as “excellent” or “good,” while 81 % say it is “fairly” or “poorly” doing. For Hispanic voters, the figures were 17 % positive and 78 % negative. Federal Reserve’s Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED) shows Black adults’ share reporting they are “doing OK” or “living comfortably” fell to 60 % in 2025—the lowest since 2015. Layoffs among Black workers rose from 10 % in 2024 to 12.7 % in 2025, outpacing increases for Hispanic (8.2 % to 9.6 %) and White (4.7 % to 5.4 %) workers. Concern about finding or keeping a job grew from 46.4 % to 55.1 % among Black adults over the same period.

The polling decline does not erase the modest gains the Republican ticket made among Black and Hispanic voters in the 2024 election, but the data suggest those gains are vulnerable as economic concerns rise. Analysts warn that sustained disapproval could pressure the GOP ahead of the upcoming midterms and the 2028 presidential contest.
