FDA Study Reveals Widespread Bacterial Contamination in Tattoo and Permanent-Makeup Inks

Scope and Limitations

The investigation did not assess whether the contaminated inks caused actual infections. Researchers noted that the methods used captured only bacteria that grow readily in culture, potentially missing slow-growing or viable-but-nonculturable organisms such as nontuberculous mycobacteria, which have been linked to tattoo-associated outbreaks in other reports. The study also could not determine when or how contamination entered the products; sterility claims, ink type, color, or country of origin did not reliably predict contamination.

The research team, led by FDA microbiologist Ohgew Kweon and published in *Scientific Reports*, concluded that the findings highlight shortcomings in current manufacturing and quality-control practices. They called for validated sterilization procedures, expanded microbiological surveillance using both culture-based and molecular methods, and harmonized manufacturing standards to improve product safety.

While the presence of bacteria does not guarantee infection, the results suggest that reliance on sterility labeling alone is insufficient. Industry experts advise consumers to select reputable tattoo artists who follow strict hygiene protocols, monitor ink recalls, and verify packaging integrity. Enhanced oversight of ink manufacturing could reduce the risk that bacterial contamination contributes to future tattoo-related infections.
