UW Cancels Hasan Piker Lecture Over Procedural Concerns Amid Free-Speech Debate

The University of Washington announced that the planned “An Evening with Hasan Piker” scheduled for January 21, 2027 was cancelled. The lecture had been promoted with Associate Professor Daniel Bessner listed as moderator and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies as academic sponsor.

Hasan Piker is a Twitch streamer and political commentator known for sharp criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which he has described as genocide. His commentary has drawn both a large audience—over 3 million followers on Twitch—and frequent controversy. The UW Speaker Series has previously hosted speakers with contentious views, sometimes requiring heightened security. In 2025 the university came under a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into its handling of antisemitism on campus, adding scrutiny to politically charged events.

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said she had raised the cancellation with university officials and urged the campus to protect “the Constitutional right” of free speech, encouraging student groups to work with the university to reschedule the talk.
