Sadyr Japarov Announces Bid for a Second Presidential Term

President Sadyr Japarov is scheduled to announce on August 13 that he intends to run for another term and continue his work. He added that any other candidate “is free to run” and that the election will not be restricted.

Japarov rose to power amid street protests in October 2020 and won the presidential election in January 2021. Since taking office, he has consolidated authority in Kyrgyzstan, a nation that previously ranked as the most democratic among Central Asian states but has experienced repeated presidential ousters in 2005, 2010 and 2020.

Kyrgyzstan’s next presidential election is scheduled for January 27, 2027. The president is also scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on April 23, 2026.

Japarov’s spokesman indicated in 2024 that the president planned to seek a second term, but the president had not publicly confirmed the intention until the August 13 announcement. No restrictions on candidacy have been announced by the election commission.
